Don, do you create your drawings from life or from a photograph?

Hi Bella,This is from life as are all my recent drawings. On my older ones, where they are from a photo I have said that below the drawing.

Me again
Hi Bella,
All my recent drawings, including this one, are from life. In the past where they were from a photo I tried to remember to say so below the drawing. I made a lot of drawings from photos I took on trips to Europe as there is only so much time. I really did not think much about it until Jason Das of Urban Sketchers got me going on the idea that the big thing about art, drawing anyway, is looking at a 3 dimensional reality and putting it onto a 2 dimensional piece of paper. A lot of the artist gets into that process and it shows in the drawing. If you use a photo the camera has done the 3D into 2D for you and you are just copying. There are some distortions with a camera also.
That said, I have seen a lot of what I think is super artwork done from photos.
I did the Tymac drawing on a beautiful sunny fall day sitting on a urban park path right in front of their dock, one of my favourite spots, on the downtown Vancouver waterfront. Tymac services the cruise ships and others with a water taxi/launch service and a garbage removal service, how lovely.
Bella, I am no expert on any of this, for me the best thing about art is there are no rules, no right or wrong, no good or bad, only like or don't like.
I talk way too much.
Always glad you visit.
